LA Bioneers Meeting & ‘SPOIL: Tar Sands in the Great Bear Rainforest’ Screening
Please join Barbara Bosson and Sara Nichols for the THURSDAY, June 16, 2011, special gathering of Los Angeles Bioneers, people dedicated to re-imagining the future of our planet. Bioneers are biological pioneers who are working with nature to heal nature and ourselves.
Our guest speaker this month will be Kim Marks, a grassroots organizer who works within the Rising Tide North America Collective. She is a former board member of IMPACT Personal Safety, ASJE, NFPA, & Bark. Kim works with indigenous and frontline communities in the United States, Canada, and South America on climate justice issues, fighting the root causes of climate change. Armed with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Ecology, she has spent the last seventeen years working in the environmental non-profit sector.
Kim will begin the evening with the breath-taking documentary, SPOIL: Tar Sands in the Great Bear Rainforest, in honor of International Stop the Tar Sands day.
The film follows a group of the world’s best photographers as they photo document one of the North America’s most pristine coastlines before a pipeline from the tar sands threatens to spoil it forever. SPOIL first premiered at the 2011 Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival and won Best Environmental Film at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.
The film will be followed by a short slide show about the Tar Sands and a discussion of how you can get involved and make a difference.

The evening starts at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 16, at our wonderful still-feels-new venue, the G2 Gallery at 1503 Abbot Kinney Bl. in Venice. This beautiful space houses some of the most stunning nature photography you will ever see. There is both street parking and parking behind the building. Car pool if you can! Or ride a bike!
We are abandoning the potluck “dinner” as it continually ended up not being zero waste and we were left to do the cleaning up. Please try to arrive as close to 7 as possible so we can meet and mingle then get the program underway by 7:30.
RSVP to Sara at [email protected] if you are able to come. For more information about Bioneers, see www.bioneers.org.
